Wandering Between Demolition and Restoration
The Mirza Yousef Bathhouse is one of the registered historical monuments of Babol. This bathhouse was inscribed on the list of National Heritage Sites on October 11, 1999 (19 Mehr 1378), under registration number 2475, and is considered one of the most nostalgic historical landmarks for the people of Babol.
Until less than 20 years ago, alongside its historical significance, this bathhouse remained functional and was still in use. What distinguishes the Mirza Yousef Bathhouse from other similar bathhouses throughout Mazandaran is its large dressing room and sarbineh (changing hall).
The sarbineh of this bathhouse is octagonal, with four large bays (soffe) on the four major sides and four smaller bays on the lesser sides. The width of these bays is three meters, with platforms one meter wide on three sides of each. The necessary lighting for the interior space of the bathhouse is provided through skylights installed in the upper part of the dome.
According to the fourth volume of the book “From Astara to Astarabad” by Dr. Manouchehr Sotoudeh, the construction of this bathhouse dates back to the era of Fath-Ali Shah Qajar, specifically the year 1216 AH (Hijri Qamari). In reality, the Mirza Yousef Bathhouse is considered one of the most valuable historical structures in the city of Babol.
